Sudan

Category: Petronas

Between the years of 2005 to 2008, I was still a Film Director for TV commercials and corporate videos. One of the most memorable corporate videos that i was fortunate enough to direct is Petronas Sudan. My production team and I flew to Sudan for a 2 week shoot. We tracked through deserts. We witnessed sand storms. We almost ended up in jail on several occasions as there is a strict law against the use of cameras in the whole of Sudan. This law made it difficult for me to point my camera in any direction so most of my photos were taken under cover. We visited places that looked like scenes straight out of a movie. It was an amazingly surreal experience. Here are some photos i took along the way.

A small piece of history about Sudan. The North and South of Sudan had spent over 20 years battling a civil war with each other. When i went there, it had just been 2 years post war. I could see schools and universities bombed down. The civil war left the capital city of South Sudan, known as Juba, in a pile of rubble. I photographed children who had lived through a horrific war..

This trip to Sudan made me appreciate my country. I came home well, for one thing very glad to be alive and the other - loving my life.
